Hanwant Singh

H.H. Raj Rajeshwar Maharajadhiraj Shri Hanwant Singh of Jodhpur (16 June 1923 - 26 January 1952)

Hanwart Singh was the ruler of the Indian princely state of Jodhpur from 1947 until 1952. He was a great player of Polo and is accredited as world polo champion, he was a fine magician as well. His Highness succeeded his father as Maharaja of Jodhpur on 9 June 1947.

Family life

He was married thrice, firstly in 1943 to HH Maharani Krishna Kumari Ba Sahiba of Dhrangadhra, secondly in 1948 to HH Maharani Sundra Devi (formerly Sandra McBryde). He was succeeded by his son by his first wife, Gaj Singh and a daughter, Chandresh Kumari, Indian National Congress MP from Jodhpur, and third wife was the Muslim actress of the 1920s Zubeidaa Begum and had a son named Hukum Singh, through her first marriage she had a son who is the well known film critic and film director Khalid Mohammed.

Final years

He was progressive and had full faith in democracy. In 1952, after Indian independence and formation of Rajasthan as a state within India he formed a new political party, contested elections and won a majority in his region. He died on 26 January 1952 in a plane crash at the young age of just 28.
